What was an unexpected expense you had when moving off campus?

Transportation is large expense if you cannot walk/bike to campus from where you live! However, universities sometimes collaborate with local transportation like subways/trains/buses to get discounted passes to students!
Honestly, I found the sheer amount of store trips for necessities to be unexpected! In a house of 6 people we have to go buy eggs, cheese, and toilet paper very frequently. In these situations, sometimes it's better for everyone to buy their own supplies instead of sharing.
I would definitely say utilities. Right off the bat electric and the A/C and heat shocked me and I had to learn really fast to manage the electric and other utilities better!

Utilities! I had no idea how fast those racked up, especially the water bill. My roommates and I would fight over how long of showers we could take, and one of them would never let us run the heater because of the gas bill going up.

Kitchen supplies was the most unexpected expense I had. I was used to a fully stocked kitchen with all the necessary utensils when living with my parents. There were multiple times I needed something little, like a knife sharpener or a colander and didn't have it. Cleaning supplies was also another expense such as paper towels and cleaning spray.

Certain cleaning appliances like a vacuum, broom and dustpan, as well as smaller items like other folks mentioned including sponges and dish soap, toilet brush (yikes), replacement shower curtains for when the bottom gets moldy, etc. These expenses add up, but again, if you live with other people, try to split the cost of these items so that you don't have to drop a lot of money on these non-exciting but absolutely necessary items!

When I first moved off campus, I wasn't anticipating the cost of all the little things you need when moving into an apartment that you might not have had in a dorm. For me this included toilet paper, hand soap, cleaning supplies for the bathroom and kitchen, dishes and dish soap, and paper towels. If you have roommates, sharing and splitting the expense definitely helps. You might also want to buy from cheaper brands to keep the cost down!
Utilities! I ran my AC all the time in my dorm, but as soon as I moved to an apartment, I learned very quickly how expensive that can be. Definitely factor utilities into your budget every month. And then be conscious about how long your showers are and maybe invest in some box fans? Hope this helps!

Funny as it sounds: toilet paper! Living in a dorm, you're usually not responsible for supplying your own TP, but when you move off-campus, that's an absolute necessity and it's rarely cheap. Try to go for the more inexpensive brands or look for coupons to help offset the costs. You can also buy in bulk since toilet paper doesn't go bad and it may save you some money in the long run.
