Thanksgiving traditions important to Fairleigh Dickinson students

By Theresa King on November 9, 2017

Thanksgiving break is the time for family, turkey and traditions. At Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, students come from all states and all countries across the world. So, how exactly do they spend their Thanksgiving?

For some, creating the meal and enjoying it with loved ones is the most rewarding part.

“My family begins Thanksgiving with a big family breakfast,” Yasmin Seabrook, senior communications major, said. “We use the cooking and preparation of dinner as a way to teach our younger family members to cook and learn their way around the kitchen for their future. The biggest tradition we have as a family is remembering our loved ones who we have lost and going around the table, acknowledging what we are thankful for. This is done while everyone is eating so that we don’t lose sight of the importance of the actual holiday.”

Other students, however, also use the holiday to celebrate religion and the upcoming holiday season.

“My family and I go to church and get very well dressed too,” senior psychology major Emelyn Robles said. “After church is done, we head back home, decorate our dining room, wait for my relatives to come over and begin to eat.”

Classes end on Nov. 14 for FDU students, allotting just enough time for them to travel back home for the Thursday holiday. However, many students do live in the Metropolitan area and do not have to travel far, giving them the perfect opportunity to see an annual event.

“Every year on Thanksgiving my family and I go to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC,” Kimberly K. Serna, senior finance major said. “Once the parade is done, we all go back home and get ready to meet up with the rest of our family to pray and eat.”

Every student interprets what it means to give thanks differently, but one thing is certain: this holiday season, FDU students will be surrounded by love, events and tons of food.
