8 Winter-Themed Decorations For Your Apartment

By Jessi Stickel on January 24, 2016

Now that the spring semester has started, college students are back from break and winter is in full swing. When coming back to your apartment from home, decorating can make your away-from-home feel more like home-home.

However, decorating can be difficult during this time of year. You can’t keep up your Christmas decorations, but it’s too early for Valentine’s Day decor, so you have to find some kind of balance in the middle, which is winter!

Giving your college apartment a winter theme can be hard on a college student budget, so here are eight decorations that you can make yourself and save money for those insanely expensive textbooks this semester.

1. Snowman Door & Fridge

This easy winter decoration is extremely cute, and something fun you can do with your roommate(s). All you need is black and orange construction paper, along with winter designed wrapping paper (for the scarf), scissors, and scotch tape.

You can also use different sized cups to stencil for accuracy of the buttons, mouth, and eyes. Not only can you snowman your apartment door, you can also do your fridge and bedroom door as well.

2. Winter Quote Canvas or Sign

If you don’t want to overdo it with winterizing your apartment this season, this DIY winter sign is the perfect and simple decor for your apartment or bedroom. You will need a rectangle canvas (size of your choice), light blue, white and dark grey acrylic paint, brushes, painter’s tape, hot glue and a small twig or two.

The creative thing about this decoration is the snowflake made from pieces of sticks, which will definitely bring winter alive in your apartment this year. It is also great to have a decoration that you made yourself.

3. String Lights

Adding string lights to the living area or bedroom of any apartment will make it feel cozier and more like winter. There are so many ways you can hang these lights as well, such as: along the edge of the ceiling, around a mirror or doorway, or draped from the ceiling like in the picture above.

The plain white lights work best for a winter vibe, but you can also use colored lights if you prefer. The only difficult thing about this winter decoration is figuring out what you’re going to use to hang them.

Some apartment complexes do not allow nails or tacks in the walls, so using small Command hooks made for lights work as a great substitute.

4. Winterized Pine Cones

This DIY decor may take a little more time than the others; however, it will be time well spent after setting the finished product out in your apartment. You will most likely need to head over to a craft store to get all the materials for these glitter pine cones.

This requires silver, blue and teal glitter, pine cones (as many as your heart desires), and spray adhesive. Once you have finished glittering your pine cones, you can set them out in a clear glass bowl or vase for a centerpiece on the kitchen table or counter, coffee table, or even on the bathroom counter.

5. Frosted Candles

Frosted candles for around your apartment can be the ultimate winter decoration. They are very easy to make, but can be a bit messy with the “snow.”

You will need to buy different sized pillar candles (light blue or red work best), Mod Podge craft glue, and Epsom salts. If you do not have a tray similar to the one above you may want to purchase one as well for the best presentation.

You generally will be rolling the glue covered candles in the salt for that frosted look. These candles will look like you just pulled them out of the winter snow.

6. Snowmen Painted Wine Bottles

Even if you are not the most artsy person, you can still make these adorable snowmen wine bottles. You can set these practically anywhere in your apartment, such as on the kitchen counter, a self in the living room, or even the bathroom counter or shelf.

You will need three (or more, if desired) wine bottles, white spray paint, black and orange acrylic paint, a glossing spray, and ribbon. After spray painting the bare wine bottles white and letting them dry, you can paint on the faces of the snowmen. Once the bottles are completely dry, you can then seal them with a gloss spray and add the ribbon bow on the top.

These will be a perfect winter touch in anyone’s apartment.

7. Winter Wreath

Adding a winter wreath to the front door of your apartment is a great and classic way to create a winter vibe. This snowflake wreath above is very simple and chic with the colors, but is also fun with the touch of glitter. This wreath will take time and patience, but you can always ask roommates or friends for some extra hands, and some added fun.

You will need several items such as a wreath foam, patterned paper of your choosing, a snowflake punch, hot glue, and scissors. For additional information on this snowflake wreath, go here. For more wreath ideas and tutorials, go here.

8. Sweater Lamp Shades

Used sweaters are perfect for creating a winter-themed apartment. There are many ways that you can cut and use old (or thrift store) sweaters around an apartment, but the most unique way is to use it over a lampshade.

You can fit a sweater over practically any lampshade; however, white or eggshell colored sweaters work best, so it does not block all the light from the lamp.

These new and improved lampshades will look cute and cozy in your living room or bedroom from your apartment. You can also use parts of sweaters over unused pillar candles, vases, and coffee mugs.
