The Interview: Crossing The Line Of Comedy

By Erin Lin on December 29, 2014

When I heard that there was a movie coming out starring Seth Rogen and James Franco assassinating Kim Jong Un, I did not give a crap about the controversy. So what if people wanted to take it down from theaters? And the whole Sony hacking thing? Please, I could care less about another dumb comedy with dick jokes.

Until I watched it.

At first, I thought that North Korea was seriously too uptight about such a low class film and hacked Sony Pictures just to give them a piece of their mind. I mean, come on, don’t let these two buffoons on screen rub you the wrong way.

But as the movie progressed, I found myself questioning it all. Sure, people said that it was a matter of free speech, but despite the disgusting dialogue, it was simply insulting. North Korea definitely isn’t on the same friendship level as our buddy England, but did we really have to stoop so low as to insult the people of North Korea, amongst others?

There was a part in the movie where Sook (Diana Bang) said that the people of North Korea see their leader as a God and that in order to rally the people’s support, they must show that Kim Jong-un is not as great as they thought he’d be.

Let’s not generalize here and say that the people of North Korea are seriously incapable of believing that their government and their leader are not divinely appointed.

Is there brainwashing? Of course.

Do they teach children and their people certain beliefs and view points? That’s the point of the single party state.

But don’t automatically subjugate these people to stupidity, ignorance and blindness.

Like any movie, there was a hot chick. In this case, Sook, a North Korean government official played by Bang fulfilled this role. She and Aaron (Seth Rogen) begin a love affair and have sex on screen. Not just any sex. Loud and aggressive sex. Why is this a problem?

It isn’t, until you keep in mind the fact that the North Koreans hate this production, the U.S. and everything about it. An American having sex with one of their women…but not just any woman, someone who is part of their government and affiliated with Kim Jong-un, has got to piss them off.

I mean, I think we would all get pretty fired up about some country making a film about assassinating President Obama. It’s not about whether or not we like him and support the Democratic Party, it’s the fact that a living leader of any country is a symbol of the nation.

Obviously North Korea’s threats of war over the release of this movie is taking it too far, but having the right to feel insulted? I’ll give it to them.

Is Kim Jong-un justified in starving his people, letting many of them die from malnutrition and committing other acts against human rights?

No, but have a heart and don’t just slaughter someone on screen because you can hide under the phrase, “freedom of speech” and your so called big name stars.
